Hopes are high that tailbacks plaguing the Knocknacarra/Rusheen Bay area will be dramatically reduced following setting changes to the Barna Road traffic lights.
The Galway City Council’s Transportation Unit has re-set the lights to deal with the heavy traffic and tailbacks, especially those occurring on Sundays between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.
The change has been welcomed by Sinn Féin city councillor Cathal Ó Conchúir, who said the tailbacks had occurred due to the number of families visiting children attending Coláistí Gaeilge in Connemara.
“Most of these visitors bring the students back to the bean an tí’s house around 5pm and then head home,” he said. “This was causing tailbacks of up to five miles along the coast road due to the hold-up at the new traffic lights.”
