Malin to Mizen horse and carriage drive for cancer research begins

The Malin to Mizen horse and carriage drive which aims to raise up to €80,000 for Breakthrough Cancer Research has over the last few days travelled the length of Ireland, stopping in Galway along the way.

Taking part in this fundraising effort is national champion horse carriage drivers Dan Joe Spillane from Macroom, Co Cork, John McMahon from Kilbeheny, Co Limerick, and Pat Fleming, from Kilkenny, will until July 19 travel approximately 50 miles each day with the help of six horses Mischief, Sonny, Sylvie, Valerie, Chas, and Dave. Together they will travel down the west through Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Kerry, and Cork, and it is hoped the public will support them every step of the way.

“There is not a house in Ireland that hasn’t been affected by cancer. We are looking for people to get in contact with us to organise a fundraising event in their area to support Breakthrough Cancer Research” says Dan Joe.

Orla Dolan, fundraising director with Breakthrough Cancer Research, describes the event as “an amazing feat”, adding: “Carriage driving is a sight to behold, and it is a fun challenge they have set themselves and we are delighted that they have chosen to raise funds for our cancer research centre. One day we will beat all cancers, the more research we do, the sooner that day will come. It is fundraisers like Dan Joe, John and Pat who help us to deliver our research to clinical trials faster, we hope you will support them as they pass through your town in July.”
