Packie Bonner returns to launch Galway Cup

Former Irish goalkeeper Packie Bonner launched the 10th Galway Cup at a reception in the Aula Maxima NUIG this week.

Once again Macron is the signature sponsor of the event which will feature teams from six countries and the cream of Ireland's young talent competing in Drom Soccer Park from August 6 to 9.

The centrepiece of the tournament is the Elite section for boys born in 1999 and this year will boast squads from five countries, including the Irish national squad, Ipswich Town, Scunthorpe United, Chivas Guadalajara, Mexico, DC United, from the United Sates, and Maccabi Haifa from Israel.

"Over the years this Elite section has proved to be very competitive and  the standard of play has been consistently high," says tournament director Denis Burke. "This is our second year with Macron as our main sponsor - last year was a particularly successful event and we are looking forward to long and fruitful relationship with John Fallon and his team at Macron."

Organisers Salthill Devon have developed the event which is now regarded as the premier underage tournament in Ireland with 57 teams, 1,100 players, and 120 games.
