Peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy will present herself for arrest on Wednesday morning following her refusal to sign a bond to stay away from restricted areas of Shannon Airport.
Ms D’Arcy (80 ), has also vowed to go on hunger strike during the two-week prison sentence that will result from her going to Mill Street Garda Station at 11am that day.
The writer, anthropologist, and film-maker was given a two week prison sentence at Ennis District Court last Thursday (June 24 ) for actions on the runway at Shannon Airport on September 1 2013. However the sentence was to be suspended if she signed a bond to stay away from restricted areas of the airport and pay a fine of €100.
Ms D’Arcy is refusing to sign the bond and will be liable for arrest on Wednesday. That morning she will make her way to Mill Street to present herself for arrest.
The Galway Alliance Against War is seeking people to support Ms D’Arcy and is calling on the public to join in a protest to be held outside the station at 11am.
Ms D’Arcy has also vowed to “to abstain from food” during the two week imprisonment in “solidarity with all those who have lost their lives” during the US’s ‘war on terror’.
A statement issued by Ms D’Arcy via GAAW said: “The Irish Government has to take responsibility because of its complicity in allowing the US military the use of Shannon, a civilian airport.”
