Two Galway farmers were winners at the seventh annual Milk Quality Awards.
Cathal Lowry from Loughrea, County Galway, was named as Milk Supplier of the Year 2013 while Kevin Moran from Caherlistrane received an award for the most improved somatic cell count at the annual Aurivo Milk Quality Awards held in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim.
Cathal Lowry, who milks 140 Jersey cross cows in a 16 unit parlour on his farm, claimed the top award.
Speaking at the awards, he said: “I am delighted to be named Milk Supplier of the Year. The grass in Loughrea yields high protein and good fat owing to the quality of the land. And through careful management of my herd through milk recording, I know what each individual cow is producing and manage accordingly.”
Lowry was one of eight category winners.
