Liam Mellows GAA Club will host its first charity event of the year on Saturday June 21 at the clubhouse in Ballyloughane.
The club will partner with the St Vincent de Paul in the nationwide “Walk with Joe” campaign, in which Joe Crowley, in honouring his wife who died in 2011, will walk 32 marathons over 16 weekends, starting and finishing each in a GAA club.
Joe’s County Galway marathon will be based from Liam Mellows, and will start and finish at the clubhouse in Ballyloughane on June 21 with all proceeds going to the Galway branch of the St Vincent de Paul.
Liam Mellows is calling on its members, the local community, and County Galway residents to get involved in this worthy cause, to raise funds for charity and to promote a healthy lifestyle.
A 5km and a 10km option will also be offered for those who would prefer the shorter option, with all walks beginning at 9.30am.
The “Walk with Joe” campaign began when Joe Crowley found that walking the lonely, winding roads near his home helped him cope with the loss of his wife. Three years later, the 62-years-old pharmacist describes walking as part of the grieving process. "Walking is great for the mind and great for the body. It clears my head. I can solve my problems and, in my mind at least, solve all the problems of the world”.
The campaign will raise money for the local St Vincent de Paul in each county, but is also about raising awareness on the power of an active lifestyle. If Joe can do it at nearly 62, so can anyone.
