Galway Film Fleadh reveals opening and closing films

An Irish-language thriller shot in Connemara and a musical romantic-comedy from the director of Once, starring Keira Knightley, are the opening and closing films at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh.

The 26th Galway Film Fleadh, which runs from Tuesday July 8 to Sunday 13 will open with Begin Again, a musical starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo (Shutter Island, The Kids Are Alright ), directed by John Carney (Once, Zonad ), and with music by Glen Hansard.

Set in New York, Begin Again centres around Gretta (Knightley ) who loses her long term boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine, lead singer with Maroon 5 ) to the trappings of new found musical fame. Devastated, she throws herself into songwriting, which leads to a chance encounter with Dan (Ruffalo ). See it on Tuesday July 8 at 7.30pm in the Town Hall Theatre.

The Fleadh closes with what must be the first film in a new genre - Celtic Noir. An Bronntanas, directed by the acclaimed Tom Collins (Kings ), is a contemporary thriller as Gaeilge, which was shot in Connemara.

A local independent lifeboat crew receives a distress call on a stormy night and discovers a fishing boat with some very interesting cargo, which leaves the crew facing a life changing moral dilemma. The film stars John Finn (Cold Case, Catch Me If You Can ), Owen McDonnell, Michelle Beamish, Charlotte Bradley, and Darragh Devaney. See An Bronntanas on Sunday July 13.
