Kylemore Abbey will hold a special reunion for all past pupils and staff members this weekend.
Students of the former international boarding school for girls, which closed its doors in 2010 after nearly 100 years, will gather at Kylemore on Saturday for a Mass in the new Monastic Church which is located in the former school gymnasium, lunch, art exhibition, and Vespers with the Benedictine community. Among Sunday’s activities is a hike to the Sacred Heart Statue located on the mountain behind the Abbey.
Kylemore became home to a community of nuns of the Benedictine Order in 1920 after their abbey in Ypres, Belgium, was destroyed in World War I. They opened what was to become a world-renowned boarding school for girls, providing education to hundreds of local girls as well as students from around the world.
The school initially occupied the principal reception rooms and bedrooms of the castle before a new school building was opened, while the Order restored the abbey, Gothic church and Victorian walled garden to their former glory.
All past pupils, former teachers and former members of staff of Kylemore Abbey School are invited to gather for the reunion.
