A man has been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to an incident which resulted in the death of another man during election celebrations at a city pub.
Sixty-year-old Liam Horan, from Mervue, passed away at University Hospital Galway at approximately 6.50am on Monday, May 26. Mr Horan had been at Crowe’s Bar in Bohermore earlier celebrating the re-election of two city councillors, however, an altercation between him and another man then ensued. It is understood that the altercation resulted in Mr Horan falling and hitting his head. He was then rushed to UHG where it is believed he died of a heart attack.
According to Galway Garda Station the incident of assault took place between 2am and 3am at Crowe’s Bar and that shortly after a man in his early 50s presented himself at the station to report his involvement. The man was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justic Act and detained at Galway Garda Station. However, he was later released and a file is now being prepared for the DPP.
State pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a postmortem on Mr Horan at UHG at midday on Monday.
Mr Horan had been present at celebrations at Crowe’s Bar following the re-election of brothers Ollie and Michael Crowe on Sunday. The deceased is also the brother of local Indepedent election candidate Liam Horan.
A statement from the Crowe family released following the incident read: “We would like to express our sincerest sympathies with the family of the deceased at
this tragic time for them. This matter is under Garda investigation. We are co-operating fully with the gardai and cannot make any further comment at this time.”
Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the assault with information to contact Galway Garda Station on 091 538000.
The deceased will be reposing at O’Flaherty Funeral Parlour, Munster Avenue, tomorrow between 6pm and 8pm followed by removal to St Mary’s Church, Claddagh. The funeral will take place after 11am Requiem Mass on Saturday, May 31, to the New Cemetery, Bohermore.
