The Galway Sessions festival returns in June

COMPOSERS AND songwriters will be at the heart of The Galway Sessions 2014 festival, which runs from June 16 to 22 and features, among others, Mairtín O’Connor and Charlie Lennon.

The festival, which celebrates folk and traditional music and it’s performers, as well as the cultural, ethnic, geographic, and historical links between Ireland and Scotland, will feature concerts, recitals, parades, street entertainment, a singers club, lectures, and a pub-session trail.

As well as O’Connor and Lennon, the line-up includes Marcus Hernon, Johnny Óg Connolly, Michael McCauge, Don Stiffe, Tim Lyons, Noelie MacDonnell, Solas, We Banjo 3, Cathal Hayden, Jimmy Higgins, Shamie O’Dowd, Donal McCague, Brian McGrath, and Kate Purcell.

A day of the festival will be devoted to Paddy Fahy, whose music will be performed by Liz and Yvonne Kane, Breda and Claire Keville, and Liam Lewis. Also featuring in the festival will be Scottish composer and accordion player John Burns.

The premier event will be a parade of Scottish, Irish, and American pipe bands, accompanied by Highland dancers on Saturday June 21, from the Latin Quarter to Galway’s West End.

The festival closes with a tribute concert to the late Tony Small on Sunday 22 at the Town Hall Theatre.
