Knocknacarra councillor Donal Lyons has this week reiterated that there is no such thing as a safe seat on the Galway City Council.
As one of five outgoing city councillors seeking re-election in the Galway City West Ward, Cllr Lyons stressed the importance of the electorate using their democratic right and voting on Friday May 23.
“There is a perception that some outgoing councillors’ seats are considered safe and that there is no need to vote for them. This is particularly relevant when you see the bookmaker odds for the Galway West electoral area,” said Lyons. “I feel very strongly on this issue. As an outgoing city councillor and a candidate in the Galway City West Ward, I have worked very hard for the people of the area and to me every vote is important on election day as no seat is safe.”
Over the past five years as a member of Galway City Council, Cllr Lyons has worked closely with local residents’ associations, community and voluntary groups, as well as many individuals from his electoral ward to deliver much needed local services. Among his achievements so far include securing a state of the art community centre in Cappagh Park, the purchase of additional recreational land in Ballyburke and Clybaun, funding for public lighting from Blackrock to Sailin, provision of traffic lights at the Barna/Ballymoneen road junction, and the delivery of an extension to the St John the Apostle National School.
He concluded: “I am urging the electorate to cast their votes on Friday May 23 for the candidates of their choice who have worked for the area and who will continue to work on behalf of the area. I have given a personal commitment that I will continue to work hard on the issues that affect the West Ward area.”
