Tuam must be made into an “incubation centre for business start ups”, but this can only be done through financial and political support locally and nationally.
This is the view of Independent Tuam electoral area candidate Karey McHugh who is calling on the Galway County Council to make start up businesses its “top priority” when the new council meets next month.
Ms McHugh believes Tuam has the potential “to be an ideal start up location” due to its “ample amount of office and warehouse facilities”. However she said this would only be possible through incentives such as rates exemptions and greater support from Enterprise Ireland for those considering going the self-employed route.
“There are schemes in place such as the short term enterprise allowance and the back to work enterprise allowance,” she said, “but there really is no incentive to encourage people that do not qualify for them.”
Ms McHugh is also interested in conducting a viability survey for possible investors, of the towns and villages across the Tuam areas to see what businesses or services would have a higher rate of success.
