Jobs boost for Portumna

An additional 65 jobs in Portumna as a result of a €30 million investment by Green Isle Foods in Ireland has been welcomed by Ciarán Cannon, Galway East TD and Junior Minister for Training and Skills at the Department of Education./

Green Isle Foods announced this week that the investment in its Irish operations will result in an additional 115 jobs over the next five years with 65 of those jobs in its pastry production plant in Portumna.

“The investment programme, supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland, was approved by Cabinet and will position the company for future growth in Ireland and overseas,” said Cannon.

“As a result of this investment, an additional 50 jobs will be created at the company’s pizza production facility in Longford and an additional 65 jobs in its pastry production plant in Portumna,” he outlined. “Further growth will be supported across its operations following on from today’s announcement. This investment also secures the jobs of the 700 people currently employed by Green Isle.”

Cannon echoed the belief of his colleague Minister Richard Bruton TD, who said that the food sector is where Irish companies have built strengths and grown export markets over many years. He believes it is also a sector which provides employment in towns and villages right across the country, and that is why the area has been targeted for support as part of the Government’s action plan for jobs in the country.

He concluded: “In the past three years we have seen major progress in employment across the country and I am confident that, if we continue implementing our plan, we can see sustained jobs growth in the coming years. This announcement is a welcome boost for employment in Portumna and across south east Galway. I wish Green Isle every success with this project.”
