Hold the date - Clarenbridge Oyster Festival to celebrate sixty years

New-crowned Clarenbridge Oyster Queen, Aoibhinn O’Brien from Clarenbridge, headlined the launch party for this year’s 60th Clarenbridge Oyster Festival.

One of Ireland’s longest running festivals, the Clarenbridge Oyster Festival will take place on September 12 to 14.

Launched at Moran’s of the Weir, Kilcolgan, this year’s 60th event promises to be bigger and better, and a range of what will be offered this year, was showcased on Friday night - one of Irelands best live bands for the past two decades, a wide selection of natural and rustic food, along with the dress sense to rival any ladies’ day around.

To kick off this year’s festival, the annual White Collar Boxing competition takes place in the festival marque on Friday September 12, in association with Croi. Boxers will be rained by Ken Horan and places are still available to part take.

Top of the billing this year is The Stunning, playing one of only a few gigs nationally this year. The Stunning will be accompanied by one of Galway’s best known and loved bands, The Amazing Apples, who are back to play the festival again this year. Both bands will rock the festival marquee this year.

The festival’s Oyster Fete takes place on Saturday, kicking off at 4.30pm until late with more music from The Galway Bay Jazz Band plus a DJ to play the day out until the small hours.

As well as the Clarenbridge oysters, there will also be hot and cold rustic culinary delights, while the highlight again this year will be the renowned Best Dressed competition, sponsored by Galway Now magazine with bigger and better prizes for this year’s 60th snniversary. Price for tickets are €80 which promises to be a great day.

The Festival Family Fun Day follows on Sunday from 1pm to 6pm with activities throughout the dayto keep the little ones entertained, including a pearl hunt, children’s disco, kiddies’ zumba, face painting, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and duck racing in the river Clarin.

The live music line-up will have patrons dancing all day, with the Bluenotes set to take the stage, throughout the afternoon.
