Fisheries Tower at Wolfe Tone Bridge due for renovation

The Fisheries Tower that has long watched over Wolfe Tone Bridge is due to be repaired and re-opened in the coming months.

The move has been welcomed by independent Galway city councillor Catherine Connolly.

The tower has been closed and unavailable for public use for more than seven years now, due to safety concerns.

Renovation work has been undertaken by members of a Community Employment Scheme, under the supervision of Galway Civic Trust.

The formal opening will take place in the near future, and the building will be known as the Galway Fisheries Watchtower Museum.

Other neglected Galway buildings are set to be re-made, such as Comerford House, the old City Museum which is situated on the Spanish Arch, and the Piscatorial School in the Claddagh, which looks onto the Claddagh Basin.

Councillor Connolly said it would be ‘‘a dream come true’’ if both buildings were renovated by the Civic Trust and became part of a heritage trail within the heart of the city.

Furthermore, she anticipates the involvement of groups like Fáilte Ireland and the Dominican Community in the Claddagh.
