Conneely threatens no confidence vote over Lesiureland

An ultimatum has been given to the Lesiureland management that it either re-open the facility in October or face a vote of no confidence.

The ultimatum has been delivered by the Mayor of Galway City Pádraig Conneely, the director of the Lesiureland board.

The controversial councillor has made his call following a recent board meeting which he described as “totally frustrating” and “the final straw”.

In April it emerged that Lesiureland’s swimming pool would remain closed to the public until October or November, while works were carried out to replace the tiling in the pool and changing rooms. Damage was sustained to the facility following severe weather during the winter.

“I raised a number of issues with the management,” said Cllr Conneely. “It is now five months since the flooding and I still don’t know the amount being claimed or being put forward to the insurance company. There is a stone wall silence.”

Leisureland’s closure has meant Galway swimming clubs have had to suspend classes, and the clubs are concerned that the delay may extend until the start of 2015.

“Leisureland is a public funded complex and I will hold the management to be answerable to me as an elected councillor,” he said. “I will meet any challenge to remove me from the board head on. I have a duty to speak out in the public interest.”
