The local Fine Gael candidate for Galway City East, John Rabbitte, who has lived in Merlin Park for more than 20 years, is determined to make effective changes to Merlin Woods in order to preserve its beauty for the people of Galway.
Spurred by his own personal slogan, “Is feidir liom”, Rabbitte is a passionate advocate for change and progress, particularly in the areas of Ballybane and Roscam/Doughiska.
John Rabbitte says that among his main priorities for these areas is to support community and text alert schemes to combat criminal behaviour and eradicate break-ins, to focus on solutions to traffic congestion, and work on housing initiatives.
“I am currently working with residents’ groups to effectively eliminate anti-social behaviour and substance abuse,” said Rabbitte. “One of the main areas we need to target is Merlin Park Woods where this has become a serious issue.”
Rabbitte says there is a need to erect more bus shelters in Ballybane and Roscam/Doughiska, and is confident that he can work with the council if elected to bring about positive changes to traffic issues in his area.
Rabbitte has also voiced his opposition to the creation of a bus corridor through Merlin woods. A long time supporter of the woods as an amenity for the people of Galway city, Rabbitte would rather see the preservation of the area and potentially the installation of support lighting for walkways to ensure the safety of pedestrians walking through the wooded area.
