Independent county councillor Michael Fahy, a native of Ardrahan, is urging a permanent solution be found to flooding in County Galway.
Having served as a member of the Galway County Council for more than 35 years - the longest serving councillor in the history of the council - Fahy says, if re-elected, he is determined to work with the council to find solutions to these issues which have resulted in emotional and financial hardship for the people of Galway.
“There is no point in tinkering with water, we have to make sure that the water gets to the sea and not to another district,” he says. “A proper plan must be put in place to solve this issue for once and for all. I will be pushing for this if I am elected to the next council as local knowledge is very important in tackling these issues.”
One of Cllr Fahy’s planned solutions to the issue is the installation of a channel from Kiltartan to the sea as well as the improvement and cleaning of tributaries in Ballylee and in Peterswell, to ensure proper drainage of the surrounding lands. Cllr Fahy believes that this can sustain these areas for the future, and in making sure the same flooding problems never happen again.
Fahy is also optimistic in his tireless efforts to invite Pope Francis I to visit Ireland, and in particular to visit Galway in an event similar to Pope John Paul II’s landmark visit to the Ballybrit Racecourse in 1979.
Recently, Cllr Fahy has spoken to the Archbishop Charles Brown who is the serving apostolic nuncio to Ireland and has pleaded with him to help him achieve this historic visit for devout Catholics across Ireland.
