Permission sought for major athletics track for city

Funding to develop a 200 metre running track, along with training areas for the all the major sports codes, for the east side of the city is being sought.

The Galway City Council has applied for a Sports Capital Grant to construct a 200 metre running track and training area at O’Sullivan Park in Mervue. The council’s application is being supported by the GMIT and the facility is likely to cost €500,000.

The track will be a rubberised artificial running track, which will be flood lit, with sand-based grass in the centre for additional training. It will be for use by community groups, joggers, walkers, sports clubs who want to do pre-season training, and the athletics clubs in the GMIT and on the east of the city.

News of the application has been welcomed by Independent Galway City East councillor Declan McDonnell, who has been working on this project with the GMIT and City Hall.

“I am delighted that we have the possibility of an additional facility for sport and the community in Galway,” he said. “If the project gets the go-ahead it will be used to enhance training facilities for hurling, soccer, rugby, football, triathlon and other sports.”
