THERE WILL be a strong Asian flavour to this season’s Galway Film Society screenings, with movies from Iran, Turkey, India, Lebanon, and Israel/Palestine to be shown, all dealing with historical and contemporary political issues.
The Galway Film Society’s Winter/Spring season will run from January 18 to March 15 with films being shown in the Town Hall Theatre on Sundays at 8.15pm.
Iranian film Buddha Collapsed Out Of Shame centres on Baktay, a little girl who is determined to go to school but who runs the risk of encountering the Taliban. See it on February 1.
Lemon Tree centres on a Palestinian woman’s struggle to prevent the Israeli government from cutting down and building over her lemon tree. The film won best award at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival. See it on February 22.
Times And Winds is a Turkish film which tells the story of three boys growing up in the harsh environment of the country’s north-eastern region. It will be screened on March 1. On March 8, Indian film Gandhi My Father, telling the story of the relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his eldest son Harilarl will be shown.
To mark International Women’s Day, the Galway Film Society and Amnesty International will show the Lebanese film Caramel, set in a Beirut beauty salon, in the O’Flaherty Theatre, NUI, Galway on Wednesday March 4.
