Pedal for Down Syndrome Galway and Salthill/Knocknacarra GAA

A cycling challenge for young and old, families, and professional cyclists will take place on Saturday April 26 to help provide speech and language theraphy for children with Down Syndrome, and GAA youngsters.

The Voices for Down Syndrome Galway, in partnership with Salthill Knocknacarra GAA Club, will host the event, with half the funds raised allocated to the juvenile section of the local GAA club.

The day will consist of three events: A 144km Western Lakes and Atlantic Challenge; A 45km Fun (a little challenging ) Cycle; A Salthill Family Fun Cycle designed to get families active together through cycling.

Voices for Down Syndrome Galway is the speech and language therapy side of the Galway Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland which was established in 2005 by a group of parents of children with Down Syndrome.

The charity was formed due to a shortage of Government support for the provision of such a service. One in every 335 children born in Galway has Down Syndrome, and everyone with this condition suffers delayed development of speech and difficulty in articulation.

Today the project is run by a small committee of volunteer parents. Requiring €130,000 to sustain itself annually, the project receives no Government, institutional or DSI national organisation funding. Speech and language therapy is provided free of charge, but members are encouraged to donate annually towards the project and assist with fundraising initiatives.

The cost to enter the Western Lakes and Atlantic Challenge is €40 and it departs Arus, Dr Mannix at 9 am, The Fun Cycle is €30, departing Arus, Dr Mannix Rd at 11 am, while there is no cost to take part in the Family Fun Cycle, but spondorship cards are available. It departs Arus, Dr Mannix Rd at 2pm.
