The popular Rás Chonamara takes place this Easter Bank Holiday weekend with 100 riders competing for the annual Gerry Clancy Memorial Trophy.
The event was set up to revive the sport of cycling in the area by the late Michael Kelly, who named the trophy after the late Gerry Clancy, a former cycle racer from Oughterard. Both men were part of the Killannin Cycling Club, taking part in races around the country in the 1960s and 1970s, and their sons Sean Clancy and Joe Kelly are the current race organisers.
Both are expecting a healthy turnout again this weekend for what has become a popular event with racing cyclists and their families.
As is tradition, there will be a 50k and 100k route option, with one road stage this year starting and finishing in Oughterard for category two and three riders, with the cateorgy A4 race beginning and ending in Maam Cross.
Registration will be held in Faherty’s Bar, Oughterard, from 10am to 11am and entry is €25, and this year the cycle is supporting the Galway Autism Partnership.
