Relegation still looms as footballers face Monaghan in final round

Alan Mulholland's team head to Clones on Sunday (3pm ) with some momentum as they try to secure a win that would automatically guarantee division two league football for 2015.

Following their 2-14 to 1-13 win over Armagh last weekend, Galway footballers will travel with some hope, but beating the Ulster champions at home is a really tough order. Many would consider it an unlikely result, even allowing for the unpredictability of league form.

Galway have a huge incentive - if they can beat the home side, they will definitely avoid a possible drop to division three - otherwise they would need either Armagh (at home to Donegal ) or Laois (at home to Down ) to lose. If only Galway and Armagh end up on five points each, relegation would decided by their head-to-head result and that would see Paul Grimley's men going down and Galway staying up. However, if Laois were to draw their game with Down - and both Galway and Armagh were to lose - then all three teams would be on the same points. Five each. In that situation, relegation would be decided by scoring averages and that would not suit Galway as they are -15, compared to Laois, - 11 and Armagh -4.

The bookies have very little faith in Galway to beat Monaghan in Clones and the away team are at 3/1 to surprise the home side, with Monaghan at 3/10 to collect the points.
