Heartbreak for Garbally

Ballinasloe’s Garbally College suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Sligo Grammar in this year’s Connacht Schools Senior Cup Rugby final replay in the Sportsground.

Having dominated the game for long periods and taken a 9-3 lead, Garbally conceded a vital try late in the game that saw Grammar take the spoils by 10-9.

Both sides were level 3-3 at the break, courtesy of penalties from Garbally’s Simon Keller, who opened the scoring after six minutes, and Matthew Cosgrove, who levelled after 22 minutes.

Garbally, having lost last year’s cup final to Marist, looked like heading for their 45th title after Keller put his side in front with a penalty and a super drop goal.

However Sligo Grammar, in their fourth cup final in five years, grabbed the winner just before the whistle when Jake Sexton crossed from a line-out and drive, with Cosgrove converting.
