A MUSICAL about capitalism, site-specific performances, and a symposium will form the Galway Dance Days festival which takes place tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday.
The festival is organised by Ríonach Ní Néill, NUI Galway dance artist in residence, and will feature premieres, solo performances, large-scale theatrical spectacles, and talks.
The highlight is certain to be Anti-Capitalism: The Musical! which mixes acrobatics, musical theatre, circus, song, dance, social criticism, and fairy godmothers through a cast of 15 dancers, singers, circus performers, actors, and a live band.
Choreographed and composed by Deirdre Murphy, it is on at The Cube, Bailey Allen Building, NUIG on Saturday and Sunday.
In Founder (tomorrow, 8pm ), Swedish choreographer Maria Nilsson Waller transforms vacant offices in Fairgreen House, Fairgreen Road, into a world resonating with the wonders of the sea.
Judith Sibley and Chrysalis Dance Company will perform the specially commissioned These Moments, as part of a series of dance works by Irish female choreographers on Saturday at Fairgreen House.
Fairgreen House will also be the location for Emma Fitzgerald’s intimate solo show, The Sea and the Shape of My Heart, Aoife McAtamney’s Softer Swells, and Úna Little’s Grace, inspired by the Magdalene Laundries.
Issues of gender, activism, and the environment, will be the focus of the Corp_Real International Symposium, running throughout the festival in the Bailey Allen Hall.
Convened by Dr Aoife McGrath (Queens University ), Dr Finola Cronin (UCD ), and Ríonach Ní Néill, the symposium will feature Swedish landscape architect Carola Wingren speaking about introducing dance into climate-change research in southern Sweden and Liverpool academic Rachel Sweeney on flooding.
Other events include Choreographing Feminist Politics in Ireland; a discussion on artists’ contributions to a more equitable society; and My Methyl, a collaboration between Galwegian artist Michelle Browne and choreographer Emma Martin at Fairgreen House tomorrow.
