Golden Cleric time as Jim Higgins wins ‘MEP of the Year’ award

Nobody knew such an award existed but nonetheless, it was local MEP Jim Higgins who scooped the MEP of the Year award in Brussels on Tuesday night.

The Mayo-native won the gong for his outstanding contribution to EU Transport Legislation, out of a total of 751 MEPs.

The award was presented to Higgins following five years of work in the committee, for his work on electronic tolling, air passenger rights, car testing and road safety.

“Ensuring we have an effective, coherent EU transport policy is vital to keep Europe and the Irish economy moving. We need the right infrastructure in place so that the Single Market can operate, so exporters can export their goods and so our citizens can travel safely and with ease,” said Jim Higgins.

Accepting the award MEP Higgins said "I would like to thank industry stakeholders and my fellow MEPs who gave me this award. I look forward to serving in the Transport Committee for another five years, should the people of Galway re-elect me on May 23"
