Galway will not be provided with a regional office for the controversial Irish Water organisation, leaving the public with no direct means by which to raise concerns.
Irish Water’s decision has been described as a “cause for concern” by Fianna Fáil Athenry-Oranmore candidate Martina Kinane, who said she also “cannot understand” this move, given that Irish Water have opened offices in Castlebar and Limerick.
“As a result of this decision, Galway county may be overlooked when capital expenditure is decided upon,” said Ms Kinane. “In addition councillors have no direct access to officers within Irish Water to highlight any issues with the water supply and quality.”
Ms Kinane is calling on Irish Water to allow county councillors “direct access to officers when issues arise”, saying: “It is not good enough for elected representatives to be denied a direct route to this utility company, which will ultimately use billions of taxpayers’ money.”
