Portumna favourites to annex fourth title

Next Monday, St Patrick's Day 2014, the hurling supporters and families of Portumna head to Dublin hoping their club can win their fourth All-Ireland senior club title in the past nine years.

It would be an amazing achievement, putting the current group of players right up there with the best club sides nationally over the past 40 years.

The club has already won All-Ireland club titles in 2006, 2008 and 2009, and they are hot favourites (1/4 ) to add title number four this Monday.

However they face a battle-hardened Mount Leinster Rangers (Carlow ) who will feel they have been written off all year and that Monday is no different.

The Leinster champions are 10/3 outsiders and most pundits believe that if Portumna approach the game in the right frame of mind and with no hint of over-confidence, they will have the fire-power in Andy Smith, Kevin "Chunky" Hayes, Ronan O' Meara, Damien Hayes, team captain Ollie Canning, and his younger sibling Joe, to collect the silverware.

Portumna team manager Frank Canning is professional in his approach and he will leave his charges under no illusion that only a really good performance will see them home against what will be a tough, no-holds-barred challenge from the Leinster men.

That said, based on experience, fire-power, and the desire to see their club back on the top of the club hierarchy, it is hard to look past Portumna and Ollie Canning hoisting another cup.
