JACK THE Ripper’s reign of terror forms the backdrop to a new tragi-comedy, Memento Morte, which runs in the Town Hall studio next week.
Written and directed by Adrian Lavelle, author of the well-received Fig For A Kiss, the play is a co-production between two local companies, Zeroline and Wolf Meets World.
The action unfolds in 1888, in a small middle class house near Whitechapel, London. Outside, fog has descended over the city and there is turmoil and fear on the streets. The Whitechapel Murderer has struck again.
However, in the cosy confines of the Campbell household, the eccentric family pay no heed to proceedings. Lady Cambell is busy finding a suitor for her daughter, Martha, (and suave young Doctor Chapman might be the man ), while her husband George, the self-proclaimed Lord Cambell esquire, spends his days ensconced in his study drinking brandy and studying penguins.
Memento Morte delves into a deadly concoction of family, obsession, lust, vanity, and the pulling together in times of crisis.
The cast features Michael Irwin (George Cambell ), Muireann Tobin (Lady Gretchen ), Sinead Sexton (Martha ), Fiona Walsh (Mary ), Graham Feely (Chapman ), Dave Coyne (Jim Bob Cambell ), and Eric Martyn (Tom Cambell ).
Memento Morte runs at the Town Hall studio from Tuesday March 11 to Saturday 15 at 8.30pm. Tickets are €10 and available through 091 - 569777 or www.tht.ie
