Financial Times declares Galway ‘Europe’s micro city of the year’

A Financial Times magazine has named Galway Europe’s Micro City of the Year, a title City Hall believes will strengthen the bid to become European Capital of Culture 2020.

In a study of the most promising investment locations in Europe, fDi, a magazine published by the Financial Times, ranked Galway ‘Best Overall Micro City in Europe’; and gave it second place as ‘Best Micro City for economic potential’; and third place in the ‘Best Micro City in business friendliness’ category. Galway was is the only micro city to be listed in the Top 25 overall European Cities of the Future.

City Manager Brendan McGrath said the awards were “a significant endorsement of Galway and its potential to lead the west of Ireland as a place for investment and economic development”.

Liam Hanrahan, of City Hall’s economic development unit said the awards will be used to promote and market the city by the council and the IDA and be a “support for Galway as it strives to become the European Capital of Culture 2020”.
