The HSE is urging people to be good neighbours this winter, especially to check on older people in their neighbourhoods. The call comes from Chris Kane, the spokesperson for the HSE West’s winter initiative team.
She is urging people to avail of the HSE’s information booklet “Keep Warm, Keep Well” which is aimed particularly at older people and gives advice on keeping well this winter. It highlights what people can do to protect their health.
It outlines that cold weather can be a problem for anyone but especially older people, those with a disability or long-term illness. The eight page publication gives advice on eating well, the Meals on Wheels service, keeping active, keeping the home warm, the flu injection and free electricity, gas and fuel allowances.
Ms Kane says this information will enable people to help themselves.
“A few important steps can make a big difference between people staying well and becoming ill over the winter. We’re trying to encourage people and families with elderly relatives to follow the advice and tips contained in the pack to stay warm and healthy. Our goal with this information campaign is to help people stay warm and healthy in their own homes and reduce those risks. The campaign provides information on keeping warm and a key message for the public is to be a good neighbour, be aware and check on your neighbours and older relatives. Do not leave it to others – they may have left it to you.”
