Local writer and prominent anti-war campaigner Margaretta D’Arcy has been jailed for trespassing at Shannon Airport after refusing to enter into a bond to refrain from protesting at the facility.
Ms D’Arcy (79 ) was convicted of trespassing, along with fellow Galway Alliance Against War member Niall Farrell, at Ennis District Court last December following a protest in which they blocked two flights from landing on the airport runway in October 2012.
Both argued they had a legal right to protest against the use of Shannon Airport by US military.
The pair received three month sentences in December, suspended for two years on condition that they enter into a bond to stay out of the airport’s restricted zones and uphold the law.
It is understood D’Arcy, who has Parkinson’s disease, refused to sign the bond. She was arrested at her home in Woodquay yesterday and brought to Limerick Prison to serve her sentence.
