Moycullen youngsters find their feet as basketball league resumes

SSE Renewables Moycullen are back in action on Saturday when they face current cup champions Neptune from Cork in the National Basketball League in the NUIG Kingfisher gym (6.30pm ).

Results have not always gone Moycullen’s way, but the players have shown they are can be more than a match for any team in the league, and they will be hoping to notch a few wins in what is considered a crucial part of the season.

Moycullen will look to Mike Callaghan, who has been excellent in the first half of the year, leading the league in both scoring and rebounds - averaging 26 points and 15 rebounds. He has been a constant threat every time in possession, and he has been ably assisted by Dylan Cunningham, who has added an average of 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, Eoghan Maxwell has been playing very well since his return, while Tomas Gilson has been solid at the point guard spot in his first year playing at premier league level. Ronan O’Sullivan has shown glimpses of his undoubted talent and, with younger players Rory Gilson, Sean Candon and Darragh Mulkerrins continuing to shine, this young team is starting to find its feet.

However it does not get much tougher than Neptune who arrive in Galway having suffered a shock loss on their home court to Dublin Inter in the National Cup semi-final last weekend.

Like SSE Renewables Moycullen, they are a free-flowing team that looks to run at every opportunity, which should result in an open and exciting game.

Unusually this is the fourth meeting between these teams, having played once in the league and twice in the cup. Two of those fixtures have been close, and Moycullen will be hoping they can change their fortunes and come out on top.
