Purple Flag status to be sought by Galway

Galway City is to pursue a purple flag status, following Dublin City’s creative quarter and Ennis in Co. Clare who were the first places in the Republic of Ireland to receive the prestigious, international Purple Flag award.

Similar to the Blue Flag given to our finest beaches and the Green Flag that flies in all of our eco-friendly schools in Galway city, the Purple Flag is an accreditation scheme that honours excellence in the appeal and management of a town or city centre area between the hours of 5pm and 5am.

Purple Flag centres offer the highest quality in shopping, dining, pubs and entertainment ensuring a visitor has all they need for a great evening out.

Cllr Niall McNelis said that from his experiance working with Galway Business watch through Galway Chamber of Commerce and his representations on behalf of the Latin Quarter, West End, Wood Quay Traders and liasing with the GCBA, this will be a great project for Galway City.

"It will help pomote Galway as a safe destination with loads to offer in entertainment, food and retail. €5,000 has been put aside for the purple flag project, but the major work must be done by the various stake holders I have mentioned," he said, adding that he would like to thank the City Manager for driving this project he looks forward to working with him in making it a success.

The award is bestowed by the Association of Town Centre Management. Galway City when successful will also be joining locations like London’s Covent Garden, Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter and Liverpool City Centre in achieving this coveted award.
