Tesco stores in Galway, supported by the Lions Club, collected more than 3,060 worth of meals as part of the Tesco Christmas Food Appeal.
The appeal was one of the biggest of its kind in Galway this year, with all food collected being distributed locally. Tesco topped-up the local Galway donations by 30 per cent.
Denis McCarthy, store manager Tesco Galway, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity, goodwill, and charitable spirit shown by the people of Galway, not to mention the huge efforts made by all the Tesco staff and Lions Club volunteers involved in making this appeal the success it has been. My sincerest thanks to everyone for their support.”
Liam Lyons, district governor of Lions Clubs in Ireland, described the public response as most generous in extremely difficult times.
“We have always enjoyed the support of shoppers at this time of the year and we are delighted that our joint project with Tesco proved to be such an outstanding success. Every grocery item and every cent we collect will go to people in need this Christmas,” said Mr Lyons, who thanked the thousands of Lions and other volunteers who participated in the food appeal.
