Remembering the true meaning of Christmas

A group of young people involved in organising an evening of prayer at Galway Cathedral in the run up to the festive season will take to the streets to encourage people to remember the true meaning of Christmas.

The organisers of the evening of prayer, adoration, music, confession and reflection, which takes place on Monday are inviting people to take a moment to light a candle, say a prayer and just sit in the peaceful environment of the well known city church. The evening begins with Mass and will finish at 10pm (people are free to come and go as they wish ).

“With Christmas Day almost upon us and all of us trying to get organised and running here, there and every where in a bit of a panic, it can be very easy to get caught up in the craziness and busyness that so often seems to come with Christmas time,” says Maura Garrihy, youth ministry co-ordinator at Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora diocese.

“In an effort to refocus our attentions on the true meaning of Christmas a group of young people are coming together in Galway Cathedral on Monday to facilitate an evening of prayer, adoration, music, confession and reflection,” she outlines.

“The evening will start with 6pm Mass in the Cathedral and continue until 10pm with music being provided by local musicians. Some of the young people involved will take to the streets to invite people to take a moment to light a candle, say a prayer and just sit in the peaceful environment. It promises to be an evening like no other and offer great solace as we prepare our hearts this Christmas.”

She says the organisers are keen to give people an opportunity to spend some time with God in the build up to Christmas.

“It doesn’t matter if you want to just pop in to light a candle or sit for as long as you wish/need in prayer and adoration. Through this night we want people to know that the church is open and that God is knocking at the door of your heart. The encounter is between you and Him.”
