In-form Galway WFC to be tested by champions

In-form Galway WFC host league leaders Raheny United in the final National League game before Christmas.

Raheny, the current WNL champions, dropped their first points of the season when they drew with second-placed Peamount last weekend, and they will travel to Galway on Sunday (2pm ) intent on returning to winning ways.

However Galway enter Sunday’s match in good form, having made it three wins in eight days when last Sunday they enjoyed an impressive 3-1 win over Shamrock Rovers in Eamonn Deacy Park.

Manager Nigel Keady said it had been an excellent week for his side.

“To get maximum points from the three games, along with great performances, has really got our season back on track. We are expecting a big crowd on Sunday for the visit of the dominant force in Irish women’s football.

“We know that we will need to bring our A game if we are to challenge Raheny, but with the performances over the last week, I am confident the side can rise to the occasion once again and do just that.”

As this is Galway WFC’s last home game before Christmas, the club has organised a few surprises for fans, including the chance to win a Samsung Tablet sponsored by eflow Reward Card to get everyone in the festive spirit.

It has certainly been helped by another solid performance last weekend when Galway took the lead through a Sinead Taylor penalty on 24 minutes and then doubled their lead six minute later via a long-range strike from Lynsey McKey.

Galway, at this point, appeared to be coasting, but they were brought back to reality on the stroke of half time with a great strike from Rovers’ Laura Traynor.

It was not until the 60th minute that the home crowd could relax again when Taylor showed the Rovers’ defence a clear pair of heals and finish to the net for 12th goal of the season.
