Cyber-bullying is an on-going issue for many young people across Galway but engagement by parents with a new anti-bullying expert group, will help tackle the scourge.
This is the view of Labour Galway West TD Derek Nolan who has welcomed the group, set up by Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte, to examine online activity among young people.
“Cyber-bullying is a distinctly recent phenomenon and one that can have a devastating impact on those involved,” said Dep Nolan. “The online nature of cyber-bullying can prove very difficult to detect and monitor from a parents and teachers’ perspective.”
Dep Nolan said the expert group will accept submissions from the public and he is calling on Galway parents to engage directly with the process. The group will report back to Minister Rabbitte in May 2014 when it produces specific recommendations around online communications, social media, internet governance, and the sharing of material online.
