Celebrity soccer match to raise funds for two local charities

People are being urged to support a fundraising celebrity soccer game on Friday evening which will benefit two local charities.

Famous names from the world of sport, television and radio will take part in the ACT for Meningitis and Galway Samaritans match which is sponsored by Lifes2good and is being run in conjunction with Galway Football Association. It will take place at Eamonn Deacy Park at 7.30pm.

Celebrities such as the former international Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, Packie Bonner, actor John O’Dowd (Moone Boy ), Gerry Flannery (former Ireland international rugby player ), Tony O’Donoghue (sports commentator RTE ) and actors from Fair City and The Hardy Bucks, will be among the impressive line out on the day. A number of League of Ireland players, GAA All Stars and other surprise guests will also take part.

Afterwards, Monroe’s Live will host a VIP after party and will issue half-price entry vouchers for all ticket holders over 18 years.

ACT for Meningitis is a non-profit organisation based in Galway. It was established in 2011 by Oranmore based couple Siobhán and Noel Carroll who in 2008 lost their daughter Aoibhe, aged four, to meningitis. The charity offers support to people affected by meningitis as well as raising awareness about this potentially life threatening condition.

The Samaritans provide emotional support to people who are experiencing feelings of anxiety and distress including thoughts and feelings of suicide. They believe that early intervention is crucial and appeal to people to make contact with them at the very early onset of their distress. The Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The gates open for the game at 6.30pm and the kick-off is 7.30pm. Tickets costing €10 for adults (U16s are free ) are available from O’Brien’s Newsagents, William Street, online at www.monroes.ie/gig-listings or through local soccer clubs. Further details are available on www.facebook.com/ActWithSamaritans, [email protected] or telephone (091 ) 380058.
