Maree win opening day derby joust

The new Jes gym was christened as a basketball venue on Saturday night when a standing-room-only crowd witnessed Maree overcome favourites Titans in a nailbiter on the opening day of the National League division 1.

Titans, reinforced by off-season signings American Chris Coyne, Tomas Mitkus, who transferred from Maree, and Emmet Murphy from Ballincollig were clear favourites to win. And that appeared likely when Titans took a 35-20 lead by the middle of the second quarter over a depleted Maree squad, which included 16-year-old debutant Charlie Crowley.

However Maree fought back to record a 69-66 victory with Ken Hansberry notching a game-high 24 points. Team-mate Liam Conroy scored 18 while Titans’ Chris Coyne finished with 17.of the National League division 1.
