Galway goes gold for cancer awareness campaign

Many of Galway’s most prominent public buildings are being lit in gold this week as part of The Light It Up Gold campaign.

The Town Hall Theatre and Galway Cathedral, the Meyrick Hotel, The g hotel, the Browne Doorway in Eyre Square, and the Nuns Island Theatre are lit with gold coloured light as part of a campaign to raise awareness of childhood cancer. September is childhood cancer awareness month and gold is the official colour.

The ‘Light It Up Gold’ initiative was originally established in the USA. In Ireland it is being spearheaded by parents of children with cancer in a bid to raise funds to finish the St John’s cancer ward in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. Statistics about childhood cancer in Ireland show that in 2010 alone, there were 238 new cases diagnosed.
