Minors cleared to face Waterford in All-Ireland final

After all the talk of Hawkeye, objections, appeals and the DRA over the past few weeks, the news came through on Tuesday morning that Limerick's appeal against the result from the All-Ireland minor hurling semi-final had been rejected.

Finally Galway minors have been cleared to face Waterford in the All-Ireland final this Sunday at Croke Park (1.30pm ).

As befitting a man of his vast experience and coolness, Galway team manager Mattie Murphy seemed bemused by all the hype and talk of appeals when he spoke to Advertiser Sport on Tuesday afternoon.

"We did not really concern ourselves with what was going on, to be honest. It was outside our control, so there was no point in worrying about it.

"As a management team you should only focus on things you can have an input into, and control. What we have in front of us is a final against Waterford and that is all we are focusing on and all we have been focusing on since the semi-final.

"There are loads of things that we cannot control, like the weather, a referee's performance, who is going to win the toss, or what was going to happen with Limerick's appeal. The Galway County Board was looking after all the other stuff. That is their job, and we have been looking after ours - preparing the team."

Galway have a few niggles which they hope will have cleared by the weekend and they are not due to announce their starting 14 for Sunday until after training tonight (Thursday ). However, after big displays by substitutes Jack Hastings (Liam Mellows ) and Eamonn Brannigan (Rahoon-Newcastle ), the management team has hard calls to make.

Murphy has been down this All-Ireland final week many times, and he acknowledged that some lads will be disappointed not to win a starting jersey. However, as always, he looks at the bigger picture.

"To win an All-Ireland you need 20 or 25 players all pushing for starting places. You need substitutes capable of coming on and making a big impact. Some players came on against Limerick the last day and did that, and now we have hard decisions to make as regards who will start on Sunday. But everyone knows that it is a 20-man game now, and a player who does not start, can come on and win the game for the team if it goes well for him."

Waterford are slight favourites at 5/6 to win the final on Sunday, with Galway at 11/10.
