Athenry images to be beamed to audience at Liverpool v Celtic

Images from the town of Athenry, will be beamed across the screens at the Aviva Stadium during the upcoming Liverpool v Celtic game this weekend. Both teams supporters use the iconic anthem The Fields of Athenry written by legendary songwriter Pete St John.

PR of Athenry Tourism Criona Scannell said “this is a great opportunity to showcase all the best Athenry has to offer to include our historical and cultural heritage. Not only will the images of the town be beamed to the 60,000 expected fans to attend the match but also to the millions expected to watch throughout the world”.

“Members of the committee will be attending the match with clothing with the name of the town emblazoned across them. Undoubtedly, this is a great opportunity for the town which will hopefully help renew the interest in the place and lead to increased numbers visiting.

“The Tourism Committee has been working very hard together with the local businesses to promote what we have on offer to try and generate economic activity in these difficult times”.

“I must acknowledge and thank local Senator Lorraine Higgins whose initiative this is and who has used her contacts in the FAI to make this happen. With that in mind we would also like to thank John Delaney, CEO of the FAI and all his staff for all they have done to assist us.” said Ms Scannell
