Action must be taken against the illegal parking of caravans at beaches throughout the city, a situation highlighted by recent incidents at Ballyloughane beach.
This is the view of Independent city councillor Terry O’Flaherty after eight caravans moved into the beach, despite attempts to bolt the barrier on the beach entrance.
Last Saturday morning, Cllr O’Flaherty received complaints from the public in relation to three caravans parked on Ballyloughane beach. The caravans accessed the site as the bolt to the barrier on the entrance to the beach was left unlocked.
The Galway City Council later locked the barrier, but a further five caravans still managed to move in late on Saturday night leaving up to eight caravans, accompanied by their vans and cars, parked close to the toilets and taking over the entire green on Ballyloughane beach over the Bank Holiday weekend.
“The illegal parking of caravans should not be allowed or tolerated in any beaches throughout the city,” said Cllr O’Flaherty. “The city council must immediately take action to secure all areas in Ballyloughane to prevent this situation recurring in the future and investigate why the barrier was left unlocked.”
