Ja Fallon - the best in the west over the years, says Walsh

Galway’s triple All-Star and new Sligo manager Kevin Walsh also features and he is candid in his assessment why Galway lost the Connacht final to Mayo in 1999 and failed to build on their 1998 success.

He told Scally in his interview: “The mentality of some of our players was very wrong on the day. Some fellas were trying to win the game on their own and didn’t seem to realise that Mayo were still a good team. Three or four of our stars, especially in the forwards, could have been, and should have been, taken off that day.”

Walsh, whose side will face Galway in the Connacht championship in 2009, is strong in his praise for Tuam Stars man Ja Fallon.

“I always believed that Ja was our best forward over the years. He was a superb link player and was more consistent than our other forwards. The two big factors in our defeat to Kerry in 2000 were the back injury that lost Tomas Mannion and the knee injury to Ja Fallon.”
