After gaining a lot of weight during her second pregnancy, Majella Laird found herself busy with a new baby and an extremely active two-year-old. There seemed little time to cook healthy meals and no time at all for exercise, so the baby weight stayed on and she continued to gain more.
Her weight gain left her feeling very low. She rarely went out any more. It affected her relationship with her husband, as she was so conscious of her body she avoided physical contact.
But the hardest part was constantly being too tired to play with her two-year-old daughter.
She knew she had to do something. Her mum had struggled with her weight and only nine years ago had passed away, aged just 50, after complications during a routine operation. The doctors said her weight was a contributing factor.
So on January 7 Majella Laird decided to join Slimming World after seeing a poster for the service.
She was amazed when she realised she could have huge cooked breakfasts and dinners, and enjoy meals such as spaghetti Bolognese and steak and chips, and still lose weight. They did not take long to prepare, and these were meals the whole family could enjoy, so there was no need to cook separate meals.
But the support in group was the key to her success.
Now, just seven months later, Majella Laird has lost more than two stone and is three dress sizes smaller. She has been inspired to help others, and she is now a Slimming World consultant.
Majella Laird will open her new Slimming World group on Wednesday July 31 in the Salthill Hotel. For more information contact her at 086 2370332.
