Galway deserves to get its “fair share of energy efficiency upgrades” for local authority houses, Labour TD Derek Nolan has demanded.
According to the Galway West TD, a targeted energy efficiency investment for local authority homes in Galway is essential as many local authority homes are “old and have very poor energy ratings which result in increased heating costs for tenants”.
“Galway needs a specific investment which will mean a clear and necessary reduction in heating and fuel costs,” he said.
The TD added that a funding investment for Galway’s two local authorities “would be extremely positive” as it would create “much needed jobs in the sector”.
“It would also sustain jobs which are already in the locality as the contracts could be opened up to existing, community-based, contractors and small businesses,” he said.
The Minister of State for Housing and Planning Jan O’Sullivan has announced an energy efficiency programme and Dep Nolan has pledged to work with her “to ensure that local authority housing in Galway gets significant funding from that”.
