A new women’s soccer team representing Galway has been accepted to compete in the National League.
Galway WFC will join Castlebar Celtic FC, Cork Women’s FC, DLR Waves, Peamount United FC, Raheny United FC, Shamrock Rovers FC, and Wexford Youths Women’s AFC in the Bus Éireann WNL from August 2013.
All games will be played on Sundays in Eamonn Deacy Park, Terryland with the women wearing the traditional Galway maroon.
Well known former footballers, Nigel Keady, Ricky O’Flaherty, Mark Cobey, and Ger Curran will form the women’s management team, and open trials will take place in early July.
Galway WFC chair Stephen Moran says the successful application to join the league comes a year after the idea was first mooted.
“Over 12 months ago a group of representatives of women’s football in the county came together with the idea of bringing Women’s National League football to Galway. Out of that grew Galway WFC and we are pleased to be able to make this formal announcement
“During that period support for Galway WFC has been forthcoming from all over the county and beyond. The support of the Galway and District League and the FAI has been particularly instrumental in bringing about this outcome. ”
A season ticket is available for all WNL games and friendlies which cost €50.
