McNelis asks city businesses to adopt a flower box

Adopt A Spot, a campaign to put in place an extra 100 flower boxes across the city over the summer months, is calling on city businesses for support.

The scheme is asking businesses to give €100 towards its goal. This will be recognised on the various boxes that will have a sign recognising the businesses’ contribution.

Adopt A Spot is organised by Galway City Tidy Towns members, councillors Niall McNelis and Ollie Crowe, in association with the Galway City Council and Maddens Garden Centre.

Due to a decrease in budgets this year, there will be a reduction in the number of boxes in comparison to what was done last year for the Volvo Ocean Race. A tender process has just been finished and will be announced for boxes that are coming out of council budget this season.

Cllrs McNelis and Crowe feel extra boxes from Adopt A Spot will “fill some gaps in colour across the city”.

Already 40 boxes have been ordered through businesses in the Latin Quarter, Scholars Walk, Bohermore, and Salthill.

Cllrs McNelis and Crowe hope businesses in Woodquay, on the Headford Road, and Eyre Square will “get behind the initiative and put some much needed colour into the city”.

“This will make the city more attractive for visitors and locals,” said Cllr McNelis. “The council’s parks department is working very hard to finalise the planting of flower beds across the city at the moment.”
