City biodiversity
Galway City Biodiversity, NUIG Ecology Society , and the Northern Ireland Swift Group will host a swift conservation project today and tomorrow.
This evening at 6pm the public is invited to join volunteers to build nest boxes for swifts (a bird somewhat like a swallow ) out of plywood at the EcoSpace workshop on Earl's Island.
The boxes are important due to the declining swift population as modern buildings are generally not suitable sites for nesting.
Tomorrow at 7pm Mark Smyth from the Northern Ireland Swift Group will be presenting a talk entitled The Secret Life of the Common Swift in the Council Chamber, City Hall, College Road. All are welcome. — EL
New bottle
banks for the Claddagh area
New bottle banks are to be e re-installed in the Claddagh area, a move that has been welcomed by Independent Galway city councillor Catherine Connolly.
The Galway City Council will install the banks soon, subject to location of suitable site. It follows the removal of bottle banks at Ravens Terrace almost two years ago due to health and safety concerns.
Cllr Connolly has asked City Hall to “work with and meet with the local residents association” to speed up the process and that this has been agreed.
“A bottle bank in the Claddagh,” she said, “is both an essential service and an integral part of the recycling service.” — KA
